Halloween is just around the corner, and if you're anything like me you have absolutely no plans. Parties are a covid no-go, so I think I'll be settling for a spooky movie marathon. Horror movies terrify me and I can only take The Conjuring in small doses. I've put together a list for all of your Halloween movie needs, with just a little bit of scary and a whole lot of nostalgia.
P.S. I also have this list on Letterboxd with a couple more scary options, if that's more up your alley!
1. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
This one is at the top of my list every year. It's weird, creepy, and silly in all the best ways. If you're feeling extra nostalgic, you could also watch the Glee Rocky Horror episode (Season 2, Episode 5).
2. Hocus Pocus (1993)
Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker. Do I need to say more? This movie has been on my social media feed a lot this year, so it seems like more people are watching this classic Halloween film than ever.
3. Mean Girls (2004)
You can laugh at me for this pick and I won't even care. Mean Girls is a perfect Halloween movie, and Christmas movie, and back-to-school movie, and anytime movie... okay you get the point. Remember this iconic line? "In Girl World, Halloween is the one day a year when a girl can dress up like a total slut and no other girls can say anything else about it." So put on your best mouse ears and cozy up to a dose of Regina George. Also, in 8th grade, my best friends and I dressed up as The Plastics, and we were, in fact, slut-shamed for our wedge sandals and wannabe crop tops. So apparently, all-girls Catholic school didn't get the memo.
4. Twilight (2008)
My friend recently convinced me to watch all the Twilight movies - under the promise of Domino's pizza - and I must say the series was better than expected. Halloween would be an appropriate time to break out the Edward Cullen cardboard cutout and vampire fangs.
5. Double, Double, Toil & Trouble (1993)
Mary-Kate and Ashley movies will always bring me back to my childhood. I remember watching this movie in elementary school. At the time I was terrified, but now it's likely just the perfect amount of spooky.
