Disney Channel in the early 2000s was at the top of its game. You can't even compare today's mediocre programming to shows like That's So Raven, Hannah Montana, and of course The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Today, I'm going to tell you why The Suite Life of Zack and Cody remains one of Disney's best television creations, period.
1. The characters tackled social issues believably.
Remember the episode where Maddie and London developed disordered eating behavior? Those scenes were so important and I think they were written realistically and with compassion. We as the audience saw the girls as their beautiful selves, but when they looked in the mirror they saw a distorted image. It wasn't perfect and we make take issue to some minor jokes now in 2020. But for a 2005 family sitcom, it did a pretty damn good job.
2. It didn't take itself too seriously.
Parody is essential to London Tipton's character. I love Paris Hilton as much as the next girl, but London Tipton was satirical genius. There are too many hilarious moments to count surrounding the heiress and her daddy's credit card.
3. Family friendly with adult humor
What made Disney shows - particularly Zack and Cody - so special is that they appealed to adults too! My mom loved watching this show with me, and rewatching it now gives me a whole new perspective of those jokes that flew over my head 15 years ago.
4. Jesse McCartney
Need I say more? The Suite Life was filled with epic celebrity guests and show crossovers like That's So Suite Life of Hannah Montana. I used to watch that one at the hairdressers all the time as a kid.
Did you love The Suite Life as a kid? What was your favorite episode?
